Pneumatic Suction Cups

Pneumatic suction cups, also known as vacuum cups, vacuum pads, or suckers, can be attached to various surfaces to provide a secure and reliable method for moving and holding products. These suction cups conform to the shape of the object they handle without causing any damage. Manufactured from a variety of materials, they perform effectively across a wide range of environments—from light-duty to heavy industrial applications.

A suction cup operates by creating lower air pressure on one side compared to the other. When pressure is applied to the suction cup, air is pushed out from the space between the cup and the object, generating a vacuum. This vacuum allows for lifting and moving products. However, suction cups are ineffective in low atmospheric pressure conditions. For optimal performance, always ensure the surface of the suction cup is clean and free from dirt or debris before use to maximize grip.

In situations where suction cups cannot be used to handle delicate or brittle items, special grippers called Bernoulli effect grippers are sometimes employed.

How Do Pneumatic Suction Cups Work?

When a suction cup makes contact with an object's surface, it activates a vacuum generator (such as a blower, vacuum ejector, or vacuum pump) that removes air from the space between the cup and the object. Once the atmospheric pressure outside the cup exceeds the pressure inside the space, the atmospheric pressure presses the suction cup firmly against the object, holding it securely.

What Is Holding Force?

Holding force refers to the amount of force needed to move an object and is measured in Newtons (N). When selecting a suction cup, it’s important to choose one with sufficient holding force to lift and move the weight and size of your specific object.

What Are Suction Cups Made Of?

Suction cups are manufactured from a variety of materials, including:

  • Silicone
  • Nitrile
  • Polyurethane (PUR)
  • Fluororubber
  • Silicone rubber

Types of Suction Cups Available

  • Bellows: Ideal for concave and convex shapes, requiring minimal pressure. Suitable for slanted surfaces and capable of absorbing alignment issues.
  • Deep: Excellent for gripping curved objects with enhanced hold.
  • Flat: Suitable for smooth surfaces like glass, metal sheets, and cardboard.

Pneumatic suction cups come in various shapes, sizes, diameters, and designs to accommodate most products. Pneumatic Resources offers a comprehensive range of pneumatic products, including suction cups and grippers, tailored to suit every industry and application.
