Pneumatic Solenoid Valves

A pneumatic solenoid valve, also called a directional control valve, pneumatic switch valve, or compressed air valve, is essential for managing the flow of compressed air within pneumatic systems. These valves are widely used in automation and control to actuate tools, cylinders, and larger industrial valves. Pneumatic Resources offers a broad selection of configurations featuring various pressure ratings, port sizes, thread types, body materials, and mounting options to fit all industrial automation requirements.

Available in many configurations, our valves accommodate specific needs with choices in thread sizes, actuation methods, connection port thread types, and solenoid voltages such as 12 Vdc, 24 Vac, and up to 240 Vac, ensuring compatibility across diverse industrial applications. For more details, please see our comprehensive guide to solenoid valves.

Types of Solenoid Valves

Pneumatic solenoid valves are categorized by their mode of operation: solenoid-operated and air-pilot-operated.

Solenoid-Operated Valves

Solenoid-operated valves feature an electrical coil connected to the valve. When energized by a small electrical current, the coil actuates an internal spool or poppet mechanism, opening or closing the valve. Common coil voltages include 12 Vdc, 24 Vac, 24 Vdc, 120 Vac, and 240 Vac.

Air-Pilot Operated Valves

Air-pilot-operated valves use an external air source to control operation. Instead of an electrical signal directly actuating the valve, air pressure is applied to a piston or diaphragm. This pressure may be regulated by a solenoid located elsewhere or an integrated smaller solenoid internally air-piloted.

How Are Pneumatic Solenoid Valves Mounted?

Solenoid valves can be installed on a DIN rail or mounted on a manifold. A manifold is a mounting block that allows multiple valves to be grouped in one centralized location. Manifolds come as single blocks or modular units for easier maintenance.

Classification of Pneumatic Valve Configurations

Pneumatic solenoid valves follow a standard numbering system representing their design. The first number indicates the number of ports, and the second indicates the number of operating states. Common examples include 2-way and 3-way valves, with options such as normally open (N/O) or normally closed (N/C). For instance, a 2/2 valve has two ports (inlet and outlet) and two states (open and closed), while a 3/2 valve has three ports and two states. Most pneumatic solenoid valves feature two, three, or five ports.

What is the Life Expectancy of a Pneumatic Solenoid Valve?

The lifespan of a pneumatic solenoid valve varies depending on usage, environmental conditions, and maintenance. Typically, these valves can endure between 10 million and over 50 million cycles, depending on the valve’s quality and operating environment.

Industrial Applications of Pneumatic Solenoid Valves

Pneumatic solenoid valves are widely used across industries due to their reliability and precise control of airflow and gases. They play a critical role in automation systems requiring fluid power control.

  • Manufacturing: Used in automated machinery and assembly lines to control the swift, accurate movement and processing of parts.
  • Automotive Industry: Operate pneumatic tools and systems critical to assembling vehicle components efficiently.
  • Packaging: Control sealing, cutting, and wrapping processes in packaging machinery to ensure consistent, high-speed operations.
  • Pharmaceuticals: Manage clean, sterile airflow in precision applications to maintain contamination-free environments.
  • Food and Beverage: Regulate processes in food production equipment, ensuring hygiene and efficiency aligned with health standards.
  • Robotics and Automation: Provide precise control of movements and functions within robotic and automated systems.
