Filter Regulator Lubricators

Filter regulator lubricators—commonly known as FRLs—are essential components in pneumatic systems, designed to deliver clean, regulated, and lubricated air flow. An FRL unit typically includes an air filter, a pressure regulator, and a lubricator, all working in sequence to maximise system performance and reduce risks of breakdown due to contaminants.

How an FRL functions

Each part of an FRL has a specific role within the system:

  • Filter: Positioned first in the airflow path, the air filter removes contaminants such as dirt, moisture, oil, and particulates. It ensures the compressed air entering the system is clean. Different filter types are available for general use, oil separation, and moisture removal.
  • Regulator: Also referred to as a pressure reducing valve (PRV), the regulator manages the system’s pressure levels. It adjusts the air pressure to ensure consistent output for downstream devices like pneumatic tools or actuators. The regulator operates using a spring-loaded diaphragm mechanism.
  • Lubricator: This component adds a fine mist of oil into the air stream to lubricate moving parts in the pneumatic system. This lubrication minimises friction and wear, enhancing equipment longevity. There are two primary types: Oil-Fog and Micro-Fog, depending on the precision and application required.
